NORAC (Management Committee) are actually looking to fund some research on the potential fibre release from the removal of floor tiles. Having started to look into this we needed to try and differentiate between vinyl and thermoplastic.

Thermoplastic tiles have more asbestos in them, which is why they score 1 point for analysis. They also tender to be more brittle and darker coloured. One other theory that we would need further data on to establish if it is a credible sign is that there is a bitumen/tar content to thermoplastic that should discolour Cargille liquid.

In my opinion the adhesive should be analysed separately and assigned the appropriate scoring. It can be difficult trying to interpret reports that don’t include the adhesive as a separate sample or as a footnote to the floor tile.
