Ashing, like the chemical treatments in Appendix 2 of HSG248, is a way of proving that asbestos is not present – much more difficult than identifying it when it is there.  It is very useful when there are lots of organic fibres, e.g. protruding from fractured floor tiles.  The asbestos will still be present and visible (in altered form) when the organic fibre has burned away.
